About the Fawn Lake Fliers Swim Team
The Fawn Lake Fliers Swim Team is a competitive summer swim team with swimmers ages 5-18. Our Head Coach is Nicole Kent who has coached the Fliers for 16 years. Swim team starts the day after memorial day and concludes with a Championship Meet on August 3rd. The Fliers practice Monday-Friday (see swim practices for more details). We have weekly swim meets beginning on June 19th and are in a division with 3 other swim teams, College Heights, Spotswood, and Aquia Harbor. We have 3 home meets and 3 away meets each season plus the Championship Meet. Swim meets, except for Championship meets, are held in the evenings beginning at 6 p.m. and concluding between 9 and 10 p.m.
Any swimmer whose family is a resident, lot owner, or employee shall be eligible to join the Fawn Lake Swim Team. By accepting membership, each family agrees to abide by all of the rules and policies of the Fawn Lake Swim Team, Fawn Lake Community Association, and the Rappahannock Swim League.
To instill in our swimmers and their parents, the principles of good sportsmanship, teamwork, competitiveness, leadership, community spirit, and individual and team improvement, along with the relentless pursuit of fun in the sport of swimming.
The Fawn Lake Fliers were established in 1994 by Debbie McCormick and Patti Colletti with only 33 swimmers. With hard work and a lot of dedication, the swim team thrived, creating a great participation sport for the families of Fawn Lake. Since that time, the team has grown to over 140 swimmers ranging in ages from 5 to 18.The team is part of the Rappahannock Swim League, comprised of 6 divisions and 25 teams, from the Spotsylvania, Stafford, King George, Caroline, and Orange Counties.
Parent volunteers are an integral part of swimming. Unlike other sports, swim meets are run 100% by parent volunteers. It takes over a 100 volunteers to run a swim meet. Swim meets are divided into 2 sessions which coincide with the 1st and 2nd half of each meet. One family member is required to sign up to volunteer for either the 1st or 2nd half of each meet their child swims in. In some cases, we will need one family to volunteer for both halves. The home team provides more volunteers than the away team and, therefore, it often requires one family member to volunteer both halves. We keep track of parents who volunteer and do our best to make sure there is a fair divide of the volunteer duties. Volunteering is fun and it makes a very long meet go by much quicker and helps parents to get to know one another. We will have volunteer sign ups available soon.
